Electronic Free Camping Ideas for Kids

My husband and I love to go camping. We’ve been going camping for over 20 years and have gone with two different sets of kids. Our first set of kids, which are now adults, was in the time when only the really rich had cell phones and social media did not exist. These were the best camping trips ever. We created so many memories. Now we get to continue our love for camping with our younger girls that range in ages of 5 to 11 years old. These camping trips are fun but they are not the same. With this set of kids, they seem to not appreciate or even at times notice the world around them. They are oblivious and too obsessed with their electronic gadgets. When our family goes camping, I don’t allow electronics to be brought with us so I have had to come up with Electronic Free Camping Ideas for Kids.

Camping Ideas for Electronic Obsessed Kids

Coming up with ideas on how to keep electronically obsessed kids entertained can be challenging. I think it’s harder to come up with ideas for older kids. My 11-year-old acts angry or upset when I remove an electronic device from her possession but after she sees that I refuse to respond to her fit she starts to join us in whatever activity we are doing during our camping experience. Here are some electronic free camping ideas for kids that I’ve compiled over the years.

  • Games: When it’s quiet time on the camping grounds or when it’s raining and we can’t go explore, I like to have board games, cards, and dominoes ready.
  • Charades: Create teams and play a good old-fashioned game of charades.
  • Scavenger Hunt: Give the kids a bag, give them a list of items to find, set a timer and let them loose.
  • Rock Painting: Campsites have a ton of rocks and my girls love to paint rocks. So make sure to bring paintbrushes and paint.
  • Bubbles & Chalk: Kids are never too old to blow bubbles and draw with chalk. If you have younger kids and don’t want to blow bubbles for them, then you should consider purchasing a bubble machine. We take our bubble machine with us every time we camp.
  • Campfire Games: I love playing silly games and thinking games while sitting by the campfire at night with the kids. One of our favorite games to play is the ‘ABC Game’. This game is simple. First, you pick a topic such as ‘Songs’ and then take turns naming a song title based on the letter that is up when it’s your turn

There are so many ways that you can keep your kids entertained by while being electronic free. It may take your kids some time to adjust to civilization without social media and WIFI but in the end, they will survive and they will bring home memories. If you plan on going camping with your kids or know someone that is, take some time to pin this image so you won’t lose these helpful ideas.
