5 Goals for the New Year

With the start of a new year, brings New Year’s resolutions. Before I was a mom, I would create resolutions and stick with them for most of the year, but now that I am a mom it’s a little different. After becoming a mom, I would make New Year’s resolutions and then weeks later forget that I made them. I soon gave up on making New Year’s resolutions and instead started making goals. I typically make and try to keep 5 healthy goals for the new year.  I think that I have had better luck with maintaining these goals versus making yearly resolutions.

5 Healthy Goals for the New Year

What I love about making goals versus making resolutions is that goals are more forgiving when and if you don’t achieve them, where as resolutions are considered unbroken promises when you don’t achieve them. Here are my 5 healthy goals for the new year:

  • Drink more water: There are so many benefits to drinking water. Some benefits of drinking water are that it helps you stay hydrated, it helps you to control calories, and overall it’s much healthier for you than sugary drinks. For some, water can get boring, so my biggest tip is to make a pitcher of water and add slices of fruit in it such as orange slices or lemon. Doing this will give your water an extra kick. In addition, to avoid temptation of sugary drinks, I like to keep a small bottle of water in my purse so that I can fill it up as needed when I’m on the go, instead of buying a drink that has a lot of calories.
  • Keep a Food Journal: As a mom, I have a tendency to eat off of my girl’s plates at lunch and dinner or I get so busy that I skip a healthy lunch and end up snacking on grab and go junk food. The best way for me to keep up with what I am eating and not eating enough of, is to create a food journal. This is a great way to document everything that I have eaten and at the end of the day it lets me look at what I need to work on and what I’ve done awesome on.
  • Get Up and Move: Too often I tend to get sedentary. Even though I am a work at home mom and I am constantly getting up to make my kid’s lunch, clean up, or find a lost toy, I have to make myself get up and move consistently. One way I try and keep this goal is by setting an egg timer for 30 minutes. During this time, I allow myself to sit and work. Once the egg timer goes off, I set it for 5 minutes and then get up and move. During the 5 minutes, I may run up and down my staircase, pace my house, or pick up toys and put them away.
  • Get Regular Check Ups: Like most mom and dads, too often, I push back much needed doctor appointments for myself and only focus on the appointments for my kids. One of my biggest goals this year is to schedule and go to my doctor appointments for my annual physicals. My girls need me to take care of them, so I have to make sure that I am healthy enough to give them what they need every day.
  • Snack Smart: It is important to snack throughout the day and it’s also important to snack smart. Instead of grabbing a cookie, I am determined to grab snacks with less calories such as fruit, yogurt, or my new favorite snack, goodnessknows® snack squares. I found this snack as I was walking towards the checkout line and while I was in the checkout line at Walmart after I had finished shopping for supplies to help me with my New Year’s goals.

Right now you can enter this goodnessknows® sweepstakes with a photo or quote to Instagram for a chance to win one of two $500 gift cards each week for three weeks beginning January 18th. This would be a great way to continue with your New Year’s goals.

There were 3 flavor options: goodnessknows® Cranberry, Almond, Dark Chocolate, goodnessknows® Apple, Almond & Peanut, Dark Chocolate, and goodnessknows® Peach & Cherry, Almond, Dark Chocolate. I made sure to grab one of each because I wanted to do a little bit of good for myself and give myself a break! After I snack on these snack squares I go from “goodness to greatness” and that is a great feeling.
