I love green beans.
I love their texture. I love their crunch. I love that they are green and I love the health benefits that they provide.
Growing up, we were served green beans from a can. While green beans from a can are better than no green beans at all, they are not as healthy as fresh green beans.
Of course, I did not know this until I became an adult.
So once I learned the benefits of fresh green beans and discovered how amazing they can taste, I decided to never buy canned green beans again.
When I learned how to cook fresh green beans, I was amazed at how easy it was.
In addition, this recipe only uses 5-6 simple ingredients:
- 1 stick of butter
- 1 pound of fresh green beans
- 5 pieces of cooked bacon, crumbled
- 3 garlic cloves, diced
- 1/2 onion, diced
- French Fried Onions, optional
Fresh Green Beans require one pot with a lid. They are that easy to make.
- Snap or cut the ends of the green beans off
- Melt butter in a pot
- Add garlic & onion
- Add green beans & crumbled bacon
- Cook on medium heat, covered
- Stir occasionally
- It may take around 15 minutes for the green beans to reach your desired tenderness.
- For an added crunch & flavor top with french fried onions
I like to be able to cut through the beans easily with a knife but I also like the beans to still have a bit of a crunch, You will have to keep an eye on your beans and determine what tenderness you prefer.

If you are used to eating green beans from a can, at first, you may not appreciate the taste of fresh green beans.
Continue trying them and consider adding different seasonings and I am sure you will end up switching from canned green beans to fresh green beans.
