A few years ago as I was taking care of kids during the day, a mom introduced me to homemade baby food. I have to be honest that at first when she told me that she made all of her baby’s food that I thought she was so ‘granola’, but once she sat me down, told me the benefits of it and then showed me how easy it was to make baby food, I never went back to jar baby food. I love the freshness of homemade baby food, the cost of it and the ability to get creative with simple recipes. Since I fell in love with homemade baby food, I know you will fall in love also, so I wanted to share with you how to make baby food.
When I mention making homemade baby food to new moms I normally get that look and then most moms proceed to tell me how time consuming it is and how hard it is. Making homemade baby food is much easier than making your own food. It takes very few ingredients and one batch of food can last up to a week! Another great thing I love about making my own baby food is that I know what is gong into the food.
To start making baby food, you need to decide what type of food you want to prepare. This is the fun part because you get to get creative. I love to combine fruits and vegetables into one batch but sometimes I keep it simple and make a batch of plain spinach. Before you start you will want to make sure that you have ice trays, fruit or/and vegetables and juice or you can use water.
For this batch I decided to make a simple baby food recipe that included apples and bananas. If you want to add different fruit such as pears you can. If you want to add sweet potatoes you can do that also just make sure that you first boil them before you add them to the mix to be blended.
For this baby food batch I used 1 banana and 2 apples. Before you add your fruit to the blender, chop it, slice it or dice it and then toss it into the blender along with 1/2 cup of juice or water. The more fruit you add to the blender will determine how much liquid you need to add. You will also want to determine what consistency you want to end up with. For smaller babies you will want a pureed consistency and for kids with teeth, you may want a chunkier consistency.
Once your fruit has been blended, get your ice trays ready. You will want to carefully pour the food into each ice tray slot.
After each slot is full, cover and place into the freezer. The night before I will place a certain amount of frozen cubes into a container and place them into the refrigerator so they are ready for meals the next day. If you find that your consistency needs to be thickened you can add baby cereal to it.
Homemade baby food is not only simple to make but it is so much healthier for your baby than store bought jar food. I love the freshness of it, the quality of it and most of all the cost of it. The amount of money that you will save is very impressive.

I never made any of my baby food because I didn’t have the time to do it. It was so much easier to just buy and I always bought organic.
That is so great! I wish i had thought to make my own baby food. It’s cheaper, and you know exactly what your baby’s getting.
I actually made baby food for all 3 of my kids. It was a great way to get my kiddos used to whole foods, because I would puree our meals (before salts and certain spices). They were already accustomed to the flavor of my cooking.
i usedd to make baby food for my son like that as well
seems like forever ago
I never would have thought that homemade baby food was this easy to make!! I bet it even tastes better then the store bought stuff too.
I’ve always wondered how people make baby food. If I have another child, I’m going to make his food as well.
This is something I definitely want to do for my second kit, whenever we decide it is time. Since bear was born I have grown so much and learned so many things good and bad about the baby food industry and also babies in general. Then again when I had bear I was 19 and now I am 26. Making baby food myself will be so much better and healthier, no worries of glass in the jar or random plastic pieces.
Thank you for showing us how easy it is to make baby food. I used to boil veggies and mash them up. It did make a healthy meal for my kids, sans the preservatives.
Freezing the baby food in ice trays is a great idea. Lots of less waste that way.
I am SO pinning this! I will be desperately needing it in a couple of months. I wanted to make my own baby food with my son but never did, and now I am determined to make it for my daughter. 🙂
I’m passing this along to my daughter who will soon enough be feeding my grandson soon.
My husband’s grandmother used to make baby food for his twin sisters. It tasted just like real food and they loved it as babies.
So neat thanks for sharing!
Simple and healthy. What a great combination for feeding baby. It does sound yummy for everyone too
Thank you for the ideas! I am going to share with my SIL.
Home made baby food is healthy. Plus, it saves you a lot of money.
I had never thought of trying to make my own baby food before. I bet that saves a lot of money and is better for the baby.
What a great idea. So much healthier and it looks surprisingly easy to make.
This is a great way to feed your baby while knowing exactly what ingredients are in the food
I think this would be a great idea for moms. My sister may need to read this.
This is a really cool idea. I’ve never tried making my own but it sounds simple enough!
I had no idea it was so easy to make baby food! IF I had little ones I would try this.
Such a great idea. I’m going to do this because it’s so much healthier and it’s a great feeling to know what’s in your baby’s food and it looks fun to make.
Making baby food looks easier than I expected. I wish I had made my own baby food when my son was little.
It looks so easy! Who knew making baby food didn’t have to be hard? Thanks for the tips!
