How to Make Baby Food

A few years ago as I was taking care of kids during the day, a mom introduced me to homemade baby food. I have to be honest that at first when she told me that she made all of her baby’s food that I thought she was so ‘granola’, but once she sat me down, told me the benefits of it and then showed me how easy it was to make baby food, I never went back to jar baby food. I love the freshness of homemade baby food, the cost of it and the ability to get creative with simple recipes. Since I fell in love with homemade baby food, I know you will fall in love also, so I wanted to share with you how to make baby food.

How to Make Baby Food

When I mention making homemade baby food to new moms I normally get that look and then most moms proceed to tell me how time consuming it is and how hard it is. Making homemade baby food is much easier than making your own food. It takes very few ingredients and one batch of food can last up to a week! Another great thing I love about making my own baby food is that I know what is gong into the food.

To start making baby food, you need to decide what type of food you want to prepare. This is the fun part because you get to get creative. I love to combine fruits and vegetables into one batch but sometimes I keep it simple and make a batch of plain spinach. Before you start you will want to make sure that you have ice trays, fruit or/and vegetables and juice or you can use water.

Baby Food Ingredients

For this batch I decided to make a simple baby food recipe that included apples and bananas. If you want to add different fruit such as pears you can. If you want to add sweet potatoes you can do that also just make sure that you first boil them before you add them to the mix to be blended.
Chop Fruit
For this baby food batch I used 1 banana and 2 apples. Before you add your fruit to the blenderchop it, slice it or dice it and then toss it into the blender along with 1/2 cup of juice or water. The more fruit you add to the blender will determine how much liquid you need to add. You will also want to determine what consistency you want to end up with. For smaller babies you will want a pureed consistency and for kids with teeth, you may want a chunkier consistency.

Prepare Baby Food

Once your fruit has been blended, get your ice trays ready. You will want to carefully pour the food into each ice tray slot.

Pour Food into Trays

After each slot is full, cover and place into the freezer. The night before I will place a certain amount of frozen cubes into a container and place them into the refrigerator so they are ready for meals the next day. If you find that your consistency needs to be thickened you can add baby cereal to it.

Freeze Baby Food

Homemade baby food is not only simple to make but it is so much healthier for your baby than store bought jar food. I love the freshness of it, the quality of it and most of all the cost of it. The amount of money that you will save is very impressive.
