As a mom that has successfully potty trained 3 girls, I can say that potty training is one of the hardest tasks that a parent has to go through. In the back of your head, you think that there is no way your kid will ever learn how to pee and poo in the toilet. Underwear and panties become so disposable you find yourself buying a new 10 pack every time you go to Walmart. Then to top if off, once your child achieves going #1 in the potty, they can’t seem to conquer #2 and you discover that when they go ‘missing’ for 10 minutes that you’d better grab a trash bag and some bottom wipes because you are bound to have a stinky mess to clean up. During my potty training adventures with my girls, I discovered some potty training books that actually not only prepared them for the potty training adventure but also encouraged them.

A great selection for helping potty train your child

  • My Big Girl Undies: This is the cutest board book that I enjoyed with my now 3 year old. I purchased it when she was 2 years old and we have read it a lot! It has cute and bright pictures and it talks about having the occasional accident and how fun it is to wear undies.
  • My Big Boy Undies:This is the ‘boy’ version of ‘My Big Girl Undies’. I have never read this version but I am sure it is just as cute and helpful as the ‘girl’ version.
  • Once Upon a Potty (Girl): To me, this book is a classic. I am not sure when it was published but I loved it. I had this book for my now 7 year old and it was so much fun to read.
  • Once Upon a Potty (Boy):This is the boy version and I have not read it, but I am assuming it is just as awesome.
  • Princess Potty: So many girls love to play princess, so this is a great book to show little girls that even princesses have to go potty in the toilet. This book is great because it has reward stickers and a punch out tiara. My advice, however, is if you purchase this book, purchase a toy tiara so it can last through the potty training duration.

There are so many great potty training books out there and I even ran across a Potty Training for Dummies. As a mom, I loved purchasing potty training books because not only are they passed down from generation to generation but my kids loved them and insisted on taking them everywhere; even on the potty.

Did your kids have any favorite potty training books?

We are currently doing the whole potty training thing here. I must say I had to laugh because the whole when they go missing for 10 minutes you better grab some wipes and the garbage can rings true. I love using a variety of books and it really helped my guy get interested and shows him exactly what’s expected. Thanks for the great list.
