With 2 girls in middle school and 1 in elementary school, there tends to be a lot of homework. Unfortunately, my girls are sent home with homework each day, especially my 6th grader because she is in Pre-AP classes. Luckily, my girls are relatively independent when it comes to homework but as their mom, I see that they sometimes have a hard time getting motivated to start their homework and then staying focused on it once they start. Over the years, I have discovered a few tips on helping your child focus on homework.
I have learned that every child is different. Each child learns and handles stress differently, so it is important to learn what you can do to help your child focus on homework. Here are a few tips that have helped my girls throughout the years:
- Create a comfortable space for your child. In order for your child to be able to focus on their homework, they have to be comfortable. Have your child help you create a comfortable space in the home that avoids distractions and allows them to be comfortable while they are focusing on their homework.
- Allow your child to have a break after school. Just like adults, kids need a chance to unwind after a long day at school. After school, my girls unwind by watching their favorite television show or having a small snack such as a Chobani® Gimmies™ Choco Chunk Cookie Dunk or another one of their amazing flavors. I recently discovered these at my local Walmart and when I brought them home, my girls were immediately taken back because of the bright packaging and fun names. I was impressed that they were made with only natural, non-GMO ingredients, and never any thickeners, preservatives, or artificial sweeteners.
- Have your child start on the easy homework first. I always suggest to my girls that they focus on the easier homework first so that they do not become exhausted or overly frustrated from the homework that requires more thought.
- Allow light noise. Let your child decide if they can focus better with or without noise. Some kids need background sound, such as light music in order to focus.
- Have snacks available. If your child is hungry, then it is impossible for them to focus on their homework. It is important that you offer them a variety of snacks so that they focus on their homework and not their hungry tummy. I love that Walmart now carries Chobani® Gimmies™ yogurts because they offer a wide variety of yogurt including milkshakes.
As a busy mom, I make sure to use Walmarts Online Grocery Pickup while my girls are at school so that I can make sure that I can be there for them after school to help them with their homework and make sure that they have what they need to focus, however, there are times on the weekend when I need an escape so I shop in store. Either way, it’s a win because Walmart now has Chobani® Gimmies™ yogurts that my kids love.
