When the start of fall nears I always get a craving for chili. I love the smell of chili, the texture of chili and most of all how many meals you can make with chili leftovers. Since fall just started, I decided to cook up a batch in my Hamilton Beach Set & Forget Slow Cooker and put a creative spin to it.
My husband is normally responsible for preparing chili, but I thought I would take a stab at it. Instead of cooking chili on the stove top I decided to use the Slow Cooker and use turkey meat instead of chili meat. In addition, I made sure to add a lot of beans and tomatoes! I know there is often a debate of to add beans or not to add beans to chili; I am in the definitely add beans category, a lot of beans!
- 1 pound of ground turkey
- 1 can of drained and rinsed pinto beans
- 2 cans of drained and rinsed kidney beans
- 1 can of corn
- 1-2 bell peppers chopped
- 1 can of chopped or stewed tomatoes
- 2 fresh tomatoes chopped
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 chopped onion
- 1-2 garlic cloves chopped
- tsp chili powder
- salt
- pepper
- garlic salt
- oregano leaf
- basil
- 2 tbsp masa
- shredded cheese
- sour cream (optional)
- Season uncooked turkey with salt, pepper, garlic salt, and basil (feel free to add any other spices you might want to add)
- Cook seasoned ground turkey on stove top
- Add cooked turkey to slow cooker
- Add remaining ingredients to slow cooker
- Cook HIGH 6 Hours or LOW 8 Hours
- Serve hot and steamy and top with cheese and a dollop of sour cream
I will admit that when my husband looked at his bowl of chili he looked at me crooked when he saw the corn. I’ve never eaten corn in my chili but I love corn like I love my beans so I thought I’d give it a try; I loved it! It added a bit of unexpected sweetness to it.
